Can it be done? I’m looking at getting something to drive to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! the week of October 14th. I usually settle for whatever random small car or van Enterprise has, but would love to have a stick if possible. I’m pretty sure it’s not possible.
I’d drive my truck, but... it’s a very long drive with very bad fuel economy and very bad handling, with the possibility of seeing snow and therefore road salt (nope nope nope).
Major rental car companies absolutely do not have manuals. Are there any smaller places that might? I don’t care if it’s a hatchback, coupe, pickup or van if I can get a stick.
Anyone?

Turo would have a manual transmission rental.

Apparently my last comment got nuked, but: I don’t think you should be worried about snow in Detroit in the middle of October.

Detroit, nah. Houghton? Yes.

Really? Huh, seems weird to me. Although it’s right on the Great Lakes and that’s when storm season starts, so it’s not entirely surprising.

Attended MTU in Houghton. Can confirm first snow is usually early to mid October. They’ve recorded snowfall in every month of the year. As the joke goes, there are two seasons: winter and the 4th of July. It’s known to have snowed on the 4th.

I rented a U-Haul a few years ago and they gave me a mid 70s F-Series based box truck that had a manual transmission. And by, "a few years ago" I mean ~20ish years ago. Of course that wont help with the fuel economy problem either.

Man, the Great Lakes are awesome.

Second the use of Turo! I have only rented once through them but it was awesome to get a manual. Make sure they actually maintain the vehicle though, these are real people with actual cars. So you may end up with an oil leak or bald tires or whatever. Just make sure you give the car a once over before you get on the road with it!

That’s pretty cool but I’ll be putting on over 1200 miles within a week! I’ll try to poke around on the site more.
Oh, also, if I’m getting a ride out to DTW I’d probably be looking pretty hard at Hertz’s Shelby Mustangs.

Very interesting. Let me talk with HQ. I have a place to stay already and am planning on being up there all week to sightsee anyway.

There was a dusting of snow in Christmas during my drive back last year (edit: or maybe it was 2014). I know what I’m talking about! :)

I’m 99% sure they don’t have sticks anymore, and if it comes to driving a literal box truck 1200 miles I think I’d be priced out just as hard as I would be tired out.

Just checked. It’s slim pickins around me from the start, and the mileage limits are not going to work either. Maybe I’ll keep looking... :/

Yep. Houghton is in the middle of the Keweenaw peninsula which sticks out into the middle of Lake Superior. Arctic air masses come down out of Canada and pick up boat loads of moisture crossing the lake. Then they run into the Keweenaw which has enough elevation to squeeze all that moisture out of the clouds. They average 200-250" of snowfall every winter. IIRC the record is in the high 300's for snowfall. Just checked, 390" is the record. http://www.pasty.com/snow/index.htm…

I wondered at a $1000 ‘84 Fiero on CL yesterday but decided (after driving up there several years with terrible cars) that the story value of road tripping an untested CL car might not be worth the capital outlay and chance of not getting home.
If someone here has a solid stick shift beater they’d like to sell me, I’d consider it.
(Also the Nissan there doesn’t have windows or headlights, lol)
Rent A Wreck does not carry manuals. I called corporate, then called local. The woman acted like I was asking to rent a horse-drawn carriage.

lmao! close enough...
and yea, I’m in the same boat with beaters. been keeping an eye on what CL has to offer between $500-2500 that can potentially carry my R6 and DOESN’T have a damn 4L60E transmission. I keep getting tempted with truly terrible decisions, like this bad boy: http://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/cto/574359…

I’m having a hard time justifying a $1000 outlay for a weekend when I may either get stranded or not get my money back afterward. If you want to keep yours around longer, it would likely seem more like an investment.
That IHC is an amazing idea because
1. It’s a 60's pickup truck with a V8 and a manual
2. It’s gold <3
3. I don’t know which generation, but some of those had 9' beds! They might have just been stepsides though.
